Introducing a ‘define once, govern everywhere’ data management style

The sanity afforded by defining data standards only once and applying them anywhere will create time to investigate innovative uses for that data.

Until recently, the information manager’s jurisdiction was the enterprise and the data generated by its applications. Information managers now fight a seemingly overwhelming influx of data created by mobile devices, applications in the cloud, and social networking, among other sources.

How can you logically manage data created and accessed by employees, customers, and partners that seems to defy limits? Enter the embeddable data management engine—a virtual data machine (VDM) that can access, aggregate, and manage data. This also works regardless of type, source, volume, platform, or user. And with a VDM such as Informatica’s Vibe, you can apply the same data quality, security, and governance rules to all data, regardless of your ecosystem.

“Vibe supports integration in virtualized environments. If you have applications spread across a hybrid deployment, say public cloud, private cloud, and on-premise, and those applications require integration, Vibe allows you to ‘map once, deploy anywhere1,” explains Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer at Ventana Research.

Simplifying management in a complex world

The VDM breaks data management into two parts:

  1. The what: A visual mapping of the business logic for integrating and managing data
  2. The how: An executable plan that performs the data integration tasks on a variety of computing platforms
How can you logically manage data created and accessed by employees, customers, and partners that seems to defy limits?

By separating logic from physical execution, you can map once and deploy anywhere, repeatedly. Or, by extension, you can define data usage policies and quality standards once, and apply them throughout the lifecycle of the data.

For instance, you can apply the data quality rules and policies you created for your marketing data warehouse to the new SaaS (software as a service) CRM applications that pull in social data from customers’ mobile activity. Vibe lets you extend the application of the rules to each new source and target.

Data sanity

“This ‘define once, govern anywhere’ approach greatly simplifies data governance by ensuring application of a single set of standards,” says Roger Nolan, director, Solutions Marketing, at Informatica. “It also makes it easier to maintain compliance with the service level agreements [SLAs] established across your enterprise with internal and external business partners.”

Moving away from a product-by-product approach to your infrastructure will present economies of scale. These will let you be more creative in how you deploy data, especially when you’re driving similar activities across many components. You can respond with agility to changes in your data. And because the data is secure, consistent, and trusted, it is immediately more valuable to your organization.
