SSG Client Snapshots

Custom Application: Calculating and Collecting Value Added Tax (VAT)

Sales to many European clients are subject to a value added tax (VAT) which is passed along by the collector the the taxing authority.  Our client was unable to collect this tax from their customers because their systems were not configured to calculate and collect it during the sales process. However, the company was still paying out the VAT to each European country, costing them approximately 20% of the sales price.

SGG designed a VAT tax extension for their Oracle BRM billing system. The solution is simple to configure in that the client can specify which countries and VAT rates to collect from their customers.

Our client was able to stop a major revenue leak by properly calculating and collecting VAT taxes from their European customer base.  The new application was initially set up to only collect VAT tax in the UK and this resulted in an additional $20,000 in revenue per month.  As more countries are added to the system the extra revenue continues to increase.

Quick Action: Correcting a Data Glitch

Our client’s sales channel includes both manufacturers and consumers. They needed to run a wholesale system change that would switch product names and also the underlying revenue split between the company and their manufacturers. Due to a glitch in the program, the product subscription end dates got messed up. This rippled through general ledger reporting and caused many accounts to appear that a customer refund was due even though it was not.

SSG quickly jumped in to help our client design a new application that would reverse the errors, correct the revenue recognition, repair the refund amounts and generally put the billing system back as if the original program had executed correctly.

Our client avoided incorrectly refunding hundreds of customers and the original change that needed to be made was completed correctly.

Reducing Time for General Ledger Reporting

Client Need:Our client was having challenges completing month end reporting due to performance problems with General Ledger reporting. The GL reports were taking over 40 hours to complete and they could only be executed during an 8-10 hour window each night.  This meant that it was taking 4 or 5 days for the data to even become available to the accounting department to begin the rest of the month end activities.

SSG worked with our client to understand the challenges and proposed to tune the existing application which would reduce the GL reports processing time to 10 hours or less, which mean the process could complete in one night. The tuning fixes resulted in the GL reporting running in under 10 hours (a 4x improvement) in less than 1 week.  Our client was ecstatic and was able to reduce month end processing an average of 3 days per month.
