Process Oriented Architecture (POA)

POA is a new and evolving concept. The easiest way to think of POA is as the scaffolding for BPM within an organization. Just as the scaffolding provides access and structure to builders constructing a building, POA does the same for BPM. What makes POA so valuable in its role as "scaffolding" is that it allows the view (what the user sees on a screen) and back-end systems to be separated from the processes. When these two elements are separated, we have greater re-use of process components, which means it's faster and cheaper to apply BPM across an organization. The structure that is built can be tailored, decorated and enhanced. Developers can access critical components of the system and adapt them to the ever-changing needs of the organization.

For the technical audience, software development is making the most of OOD and AOP techniques to create versatile and extendable enterprise applications. However, the business process has not yet taken advantage of OOD and AOP concepts like polymorphism, inheritance and aspects. The reason for this has been due to a tight coupling between front-end views ("user interfaces") with the business process. Likewise, integration with back-end systems and the processes are also so tightly coupled and integrated that business processes cannot morph into other scenarios. By creating architectures that decouple these components from the business process, we can design business processes that are more abstract, and can be re-used and extended into many uses and situations. The effort required to build out BPM across communities of users or across an organization can now focus on the particular needs of the community or department. These users can leverage what they can from these existing processes or have them customized to suit their particular needs. Developers can do this quickly and easily by gaining access to process, just as builders gain access to structures using scaffolding.

Business Intelligence by Jennifer Vilches

It's practically impossible to make sound business decisions without access to quality, up-to-date data. In the past decade, Business Intelligence (BI) has become more and more important for companies of all sizes as they search for ways to increase their competitiveness.

Access to your data and the Oracle BI suite are all you need to set up one-stop report shopping.
  • Executive-level dashboards? Check.
  • Detailed template-driven reports? Check.
  • Ad-hoc report analysis? Check.

So how does Oracle manage these feats of reporting? The BI server manages three layers of metadata. The first is the physical location of your data. The second is a simplified logical model built on top of the physical layer. The third is the presentation to the end user. Building a sound logical model allows all users to play by the same business rules – no more wondering if marketing is looking at the same calculations as accounting.

The Oracle BI Suite (Standard Edition One) includes three major elements:
The Oracle BI Server manages a consistent view of all your data, whether it resides in an Oracle database or not. This is a powerful tool to use to model your data into easy-to-use groupings.

Answers is the place to go for ad-hoc reporting and analysis. Drag and drop to create reports or graphs that you can then add to a Dashboard. Answers does not require technical skills to use; it's a great way for business users to access their data. Access to Answers and the Dashboards is all web-based, so there’s no special client tool to install.

If you're looking for highly formatted reports or documents, BI Publisher will meet those needs. Even the most complex files can be created starting with templates built in Microsoft Office tools.

The Oracle BI Suite is an easy-to-use, scalable way to get reliable answers about your data.
